The Blademasters are the warriors who have come out of the Bladetide victorious, the gruelling ceremonial combats held each generation to test the skills of the Chapter's brethren with the honoured chainsword. To become a Blademaster is to be a warrior of supreme skill with the chainsword, having personally bested over a hundred challengers in ritualised combat to first blood.

In battle, Blademasters are often called upon to join the Chapters Vengeance and Storm squads, lending the squad their considerable expertise and skill at arms and it is a rare warrior indeed who does not improve his swordsmanship when watching the elegantly placed strikes of a Blademaster.

Blademasters only wield a single weapon, the chainfang. Each chainfang is a unique weapon, crafted by only a single artificer and it is widely rumoured that only fifteen such weapons exist in the entire Imperium. Chainfangs are heavily modified chainswords with a heavily weighted blade which can be counter-balanced by tiny anti-gravitic motors built along the blade's length and it is these anti-grav motors which stop them being replicated for the technology to produce them have since faded into history. In the hands of a Blademaster, a chainfang is a rightly feared weapon, able to strike lightning quick as well as deliver punishing and devastating blows.

Some of the Chapter's greatest victories have been due to the herioc efforts of the Chapter's Blademasters.

During the Vivenhall Forge War in 342.M38, Blademaster Oarn Davvik single-handed slew the Hive Tyrant leading the Tyranid splinter fleet that threatened Vivenhall. Although he was later slain by a brood of Genestealers, his body and chainfang were recovered from amidst the bodies of a half score of the dead alien creatures, their bodies rent open by the teeth of the chainfang.

On the dead world of Xrept, the chainfang of Tarro Kalk tore through the hideous forms of several packs of Necron Flayed Ones.

Although Kalk was killed by the massed guass beams of two score of Necron Warriors. As his body and power armour disintegrated, Kalk's last act of was of vengeance. He ended the miserable half-life of a Necron Tomb Spyder as it ravaged a squad of Fists of Flame nearby by throwing his chainfang and severing the Spyder's head as the weapon arced through the air to become embedded in the wall. From there, it was subsequently recovered and returned to the Chapter.

The Bladetide

Each year, at the time of the Great Pilgrimage, the Chapter hosts a festival known simply as the Bladetide.

Warriors from across the Chapter enter it with one goal, to prove their skill with the chainsword and defeat all their opponents to join the hallowed ranks of the Blademasters. Only the very best make it through the first bouts of ceremonial combat with the victor being decided by first blood.

Unique Wargear:

Chainfang: Chainfangs are heavy, two-handed ceremonial chainswords wielded exclusively by the Fists of Flame Blademasters.

Chainfangs counts as a close combat weapon that increases the Strength of the wielder to 5.

Note that due to the heavier nature of these weapons, Blademaster cannot charge headlong into the enemy and utilise the chainfang effectively so his effective Strength in combat can never be more the 5 after all modifiers. Therefore, a Tarsissian Veteran Blademaster will still hit at Strength 5 on the turn he charges instead of '6' due to Furious Charge's strength bonus.

Special Rules:

Honoured Tutelage: Many Blademasters will spend time training the Chapter's Vengeance and Storm squads.

Any Vengeance or Storm squad a Blademaster joins may re-roll any rolls of a '1' or a '2' instead of just the '1's when rolling To Hit as per the Close Combat Specialists rule.

Note this also applies to the Blademaster, although his skill with the chainsword is that he may re-roll all misses with his chainfang.
