Brother Marthenues

Mathenues was once a proud and boastful warrior, whose bravery and iron will were renowned throughout the Belt of Fire. A peerless fighter of supreme daring, skill and tenacious nature, he had fought and beaten everything from rampaging Ork Warlords to the vile Carnifex abominations of the Tyranid Splinter hivefleet that ravaged several worlds under the Chapter's protection.

It wasn't until he was given the rank of Cohort Master at the head of several hundred Fists of Flame Space Marines that it all changed. As his Cohort begun to rain down from orbit in the opening stages of a full scale drop pod assault on the hiveworld of Jense, Mathenues descended on jump pack at the head of several Storm Squads.

Flak fire lanced the skies around Mathenues as he descended toward the insurrectionist fortress below, only moments before the enemy revealed the true cause of the sudden uprising. Vile aliens poured out from the battlements as black portals begun to open across the breadth of the fortress the Fists of Flame had begun to assault. Within moments, the few surviving human insurrectionist were cut down by their erstwhile xenos allies and the arriving Fists of Flame struck at the new foe with vigour.

During the fighting, Mathenues was hit a glancing blow from a dark energy beam from a emerald green skiff as it darted from battlement to battlement. With his leg armour fused to the armoured rockcrete of the fortress, Mathenues ordered the Fists of Flame forward to press the attack, knowing that his Cohort would carry the day and assure victory in the Emperor's name.

When they returned to where Mathenues had been fused to the bedrock, all they could find were the remains of slain aliens.

It took Mathenues a full century to return to the Chapter, appearing out of nowhere one day during another Eldar pirate attack, this time on the Forge World of Vivenhall. Perhaps it was the xeno's folly to bring Mathenues along on one of their realspace raids, or perhaps Mathenues escaped or that he was simply released once his usefulness had expired and only Mathenues and the xenos themselves knows the full truth.

Whatever the reason for his release or escape Mathenues was embraced by the Chapter only once the Apothecaries had confirmed his identity from genetic records kept on all Fists of Flame brethren.

Of the time he was captured, or how he managed to escape his Eldar captors, Mathenues would never speak and Librarian mind probes revealed scant information for it was clear that his memories had been removed somehow or buried so deeply that only Mathenues could access them. Of the visible evidence of his torment, Mathenues bears a body wracked with scars and a face destroyed by scar tissue and every bone in his body shows signs of being broken several times during his capture.

It also quickly became evident that Mathew's personality and demeanour had changed drastically, for no longer was Mathenues boastful and load but reclusive, quiet and disdainful of anyone seeing his scarred body and so Mathenues is never without his power armour when he is forced to be in the company of others.
