Standard Bearer

Standard Bearers are the honoured individuals who have earned the privilege to carry into battle one of the Chapters many standards and banners. Such priceless relics often commemorate victories over enemies the Chapter have bested in past engagements, or may extol the current Cohort Master's individual heroism that may have earned him the title of Master of War. Others still may bear symbols and depictions of hard-fought campaigns, or climatic events in the Chapter's history. Regardless of the banner carried, each Standard Bearer is viewed with singular awe, respect and esteem and many an assault has been carried unto the enemy with a Standard Bearer at the head.

The fierce determination and fighting spirit of the Standard Bearers are mute testament to the standards they carry into battle, for each banner is held in a place of great reverence, and hold great spiritual significance to the Chapter, so much so that when not unfurled in battle, each Standard is placed behind stasis fields in the Chapter's Relictorium where the ravages of time cannot harm them.

However, not all standards are made from fabric and cloth, for the Fists of Flame bear many holy icons which are just as much steeped in legend and myth as their more conventional counterparts. One such icon, known simply as the Icon of the Lady, is said to contain bone fragments from the patron saint of Tarsiss III, Saint Alica herself. Although the bone fragments are carried in nothing more then a simple wooden box, their presence on the battlefield will ensure that the Fists of Flame will fight harder to not disgrace the memory of the Great Alica, nor will they allow her remains to be lost to the enemy.

It is not uncommon for particularly heroic Standard Bearers to earn themselves a Standard depicting their own acts of bravery and one such individual was known simply as Scarrison.

On the twilight world of Xea, the Fists of Flame engaged the greenskin Orks. After a short but bloody battle at the height of the mountainous regions that girdled Xea, the Fists of Flame were forced into retreat as wave after wave of Orks surged from the lowland forests and jungles and threatened to overwhelm the Astartes.

Standard Bearer Scarrison was the only Battle Brother to be left behind, but only after passing the Banner of Kantris Daemonstalker to a young Scout as he climbed aboard the last Thunderhawk to leave Xea.

Scarrison himself stood firm in the face of certain death as the Thunderhawk took to the air, for Scarrison knew that without him holding the Orks back with blade and bolt pistol, the Thunderhawk would have been swamped in green filth, dooming his Battle Brothers to the same death he was knowingly consigning himself to.
