Vengeance Squad

Upon his elevation to full Battle Brother, each Initiate will spend his formative years learning to fight the enemies of the Emperor in one of the Chapter's Vengeance squads, or die in the attempt. Only when they have proven their mettle in the crucible of war will members be considered for additional training as a member of the Storm, Sentinel or Punisher squads.

Members of the Vengeance squads fight almost exclusively with bolt pistol and chainsword, occasionally supplemented with heavier arms such as tank-hunting meltaguns, armour melting plasma weaponry and scorching flamers and the mission of each Vengeance squad will dictate which arm is required for the upcoming task.

Vengeance squads form the core of the Chapter's fighting forces, and a great many Fists of Flame spend their live,s fighting as a member of a Vengeance squad because, for them, the lure of battle and destroying their enemies in a bloody melee are the highest of rewards.

Vengeance squads are highly mobile, often deployed alongside one of the Chapter's Rhino or Razorback transports or deployed directly into the maelstrom of combat via drop pod where they can overwhelm the enemy with brutal close combat assaults and few enemies have withstood a concentrated Vengeance squad assault.

Chapter tactical doctrine dictates that it falls to the Vengeance squads to be the second wave in most assaults, following closely the Chapter's more mobile Storm squads so that any gap breached by the Storm squads can be widened and exploited by the Vengeance squads.

Each Vengeance squad bears a proud heraldry all their own and a few can trace their impressive histories back to the Chapter Founding and fought in the seminal campaign and whom marched proudly across the ground where the Shrinehold stands on Tarsiss III upon their victorious return.

Each squad will be led by a Veteran of many campaigns and is the most experienced Astartes in the squad, often bearing witness to many centuries of war. It is the Veterans duty to impart the methods of death with bolt pistol and chainsword and each Fists of Flame Space Marine is constantly being trained and tested to become better fighters by their respective squad leaders.

Should a squad become depleted entirely, seasoned warriors are rotated in to bring the squad back up to minimum strength and fresh Initiates brought in to fill the other positions in the squad to learn from the more experience brethren.

The Holy Chainsword

The chainsword is more then a mere weapon to the Fists of Flame, it is an instrument of their worship of the Emperor, a devine tool to slay the heretic, witch and alien alike.

Each chainsword is hand-crafted by a skilled artificer on the Forge world of Vivenhall and consists of a belt of spinning, monomolecular edged teeth set into a running chassis with a powerful servo-motor which powers the belt to high speeds, producing the characteristic high-pitched whine of the chainsword.

Upon completion of his time as an Initiate, a Battle Brother will receive his chainsword when he receives his power armour and he must attend to both with equal vigil for the power armour will protect him from harm and the chainsword will punish the unclean as they are two sides of the same coin and each chainsword is as individual as the Brother wielding it and even then, each Brother is constantly refining their own weapon through small, subtle modifications to the frame, motor or teeth.

It is common practice for the Brother Chaplains to administer to the brethren before battle, anointing their chainswords with holy oils and blessing them with Tarsissian scripture. Should a Battle Brother lose his chainsword, it is the gravest insult to the artificers who work ceaselessly to produce, repair and maintain the many hundreds of chainswords the Chapter keeps in circulation and a Brother will fight all the harder to retrieve his weapon.
